What a joy it is to come to the Winter Solstice and know that the sun is returning. The short, days can be hard to live through, often we feel that there isn’t enough time to get done what we want and the short daylight only exasperates the feeling. I think there is also an inner need to hibernate that slows many of us down, that we are fighting against in the short afternoon daylight hours. So it is with a lightening of spirit that I always welcome the Solstice and the knowledge that the days will begin to lengthen. One of my long time students gave us this gift today after class as we were picking up and putting things away. She quoted from memory and later sent it to me after looking up the source. Thank you Trudy!
I Heard A Bird Sing
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical think
And sweet to remember
“We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,”
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
